Situation Update — Air Arabia Service Suspended & New Saudi Routes Launched

Current Situation: Flights to & from Socotra (2026)
The popular UNESCO World Heritage island of Socotra has seen significant disruptions to its international air connections. Due to recent clashes in Yemen involving Saudi-aligned government forces and groups previously aligned with the UAE, all regular charter flights from Abu Dhabi (operated by Air Arabia) have been halted indefinitely as of early January 2026.
Hundreds of tourists were left temporarily stranded on the island, prompting diplomatic and evacuation efforts. Many were eventually flown to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, as coordinated operations — including Yemenia Airways flights — succeeded in clearing all foreign visitors from the island by mid-January 2026.
Why the Air Arabia Flights Stopped
The termination of Air Arabia’s service from Abu Dhabi to Socotra was a direct consequence of escalating political tensions and a rift between Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates in Yemen, leading to changes in control and aviation permissions. Air services were grounded as the UAE reduced its presence in Yemen, particularly on Socotra.
Socotra’s strategic position and delicate local politics have contributed to a rapidly changing travel environment, and the previously scheduled charter flights are no longer operational.
New Flight Routes & Alternatives
To restore connectivity and support tourism and travel — including the evacuation of stranded visitors — Yemenia Airways and Yemen Airways have launched new direct flights between Socotra (SCT) and Jeddah (JED) in Saudi Arabia.
Socotra ↔ Jeddah
Frequency: Twice weekly (Mondays & Tuesdays) as an emerging international link.
Purpose: Initially focused on evacuations and ensuring the safe departure of visitors — with the intention of evolving into a regular international service.
Bookings: Expected through airline local offices or trusted travel agencies; schedules may be updated frequently.
Additional plans discussed by the Yemeni Civil Aviation Authority include potential broader connections to Cairo and other regional hubs, but these remain in development due to current conditions.
Safety & Traveler Advice
Travelers considering Socotra should be aware that:
The security situation remains volatile.
Flight schedules can change with minimal notice.
Prospective visitors must check travel advisories and airline confirmations.
This period of transition represents a significant shift in how Socotra is connected internationally — from an Abu Dhabi-centred charter route to emerging links with Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s national carrier.
Looking Ahead
Restoring stable and regular international air access to Socotra is a priority for Yemen and its partners. The new Socotra–Jeddah service is a major step toward diversifying access and reducing reliance on a single international connection.
